Mildmay

If you are looking for an inviting community, filled with the charm of an earlier time, Mildmay is an ideal choice. Known as the “Lamplighter Village” for the old-style decorative streetlights in the downtown, and with its cobblestone walks, Mildmay welcomes you with a warm and friendly feeling.

Originally called Mernersville for Samuel Merner who surveyed the town plot in 1867, the village was renamed Mildmay, after Mildmay Park in London, England, when the post office was established.

Surrounded by some of the richest farmland in south Bruce County, Mildmay was a thriving community with a railway station and by the 1880s boasted brickyards, a flax mill, two large flour mills and many other important services for the surrounding agricultural community. It grew quickly and at one time challenged Walkerton for the county seat.

Mildmay was home to the Lobsinger Foundry for more than 100 years. The foundry manufactured the Mildmay Lion threshing machine, an innovative farm implement that became a dominant feature of farms throughout Bruce County.

Today, with a strong sense of its history intact, Mildmay gives residents and visitors alike a sense of welcome and belonging, a comfortable portrait of an earlier time. The downtown offers a range of specialty shops featuring cheeses, jewellery, furniture and unique gifts.

Otter Creek, which once powered the early mills, now flows through Rotary Park which offers an artesian well and links to the walking trail system. Mildmay is a wonderful place to visit, and for many an even nicer place to live. The community provides an extensive recreation program with a large and active recreation complex, a community swimming pool, ball diamonds, soccer fields, a skateboard park, tennis and shuffleboard courts and horseshoe pits.

For those who want a quieter pace and a sense of time gone by, Mildmay offers a safe and nurturing place to live, a lifestyle suited to young, growing families and to those looking for a comfortable retirement.
